BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Voters in Burlington will decide on March city assembly day whether Vermont's largest city should have marijuana stores.
The city council decided to present the measure to the voters on the day of the city assembly, reported WCAX-TV.
If approved, a portion of the Burlington tax money raised from cannabis sales would be used for local options to support minority businesses and social support networks.
In September Vermont legislation legalized recreational marijuana sales by establishing a retail taxation and regulation system for pot sales. Governor Phil Scott made the bill into law without his signature.
The law contains a provision that establishes a cannabis control board with an executive director to oversee taxation and regulation of the market. In addition, a 14% excise tax will be introduced on cannabis products, 30% of which will be used for drug abuse prevention, and the 6% sales tax will be extended to cannabis products.
