Voters approve Galena's gross sales tax to assist law enforcement

GALENA, MO (KY3) – Voters approved a sales tax for Galena to help fund law enforcement and improve their emergency services.

The measure was passed by Stone County with 29-7 votes per election result.

For the residents of Galena, a 1% increase in sales tax was on the ballot. This replaces the personal wealth tax paid to the city.

Michael Cupp, Galena police officer, says the permit will give the department more resources.

"Better equipment, people here, more civil servants the day I'm currently here part-time. We hope the town of Galena is better covered," said Cupp.

Depending on the measure, the tax may only be used for law enforcement purposes.
