Voters could also be requested to abolish ND property tax

Property taxes would be a thing of the past in North Dakota under a Constitutional amendment being proposed by Representative Rick Becker.  Becker briefed the House Judiciary Committee on the plan today (Monday).

He says the state would assume funding of education…law enforcement… counties…and city governments.

Becker says “local control” would still be maintained.

Terry Trainor of the North Dakota Association of Counties says the concept has been tried before without a lot of success.  “The idea of centrally collecting taxes and distributing it out…that was the Soviet Union.”

If voters approve the idea it would take effect in January 2024.  Becker says property taxes are the number one concern of North Dakota residents.

The committee took no immediate action on the bill.
