BIR collects P1B in again taxes

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) collected £ 1.014 billion in back taxes from 274 commercial operations that it had temporarily closed in the first half of the year, according to the Treasury Department (DoF).

The office also filed 84 complaints with the Justice Department against tax evaders with combined unpaid taxes of P3.15 billion P. Guballa.

BIR has also filed 17 cases in the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) for $ 1.54 billion.

The office locks down companies that violate tax laws, such as B. not registering, issuing receipts and filing VAT returns. Companies that undervalue taxable sales by at least 30% also risk closing them.

The closure order lasts at least five days and can only be lifted once the taxpayer has complied with his tax obligations.

BIR collected P 608 million in arrears tax payments after closing 209 companies last year. It has also filed 157 complaints with the Department of Justice over tax liabilities worth P7.5 billion and 24 cases with the tax court for P754 million in unpaid taxes.

The office's latest operations included two warehouses in Pampanga province, where it found a total of pesos 1.56 billion in excise tax leaks, Mr Guballa said.

The bureau confiscated a motor vehicle and 27,132 packets of illegal cigarettes without tax or counterfeit stamps and the raw materials used to make cigarettes from the Pampanga Technology Resource Center.

The agency also seized 2.06 million counterfeit stamps and two cigarette machines from a facility in the Global Aseana Business Park in San Simon. BIR uses stamps on cigarettes for which excise duties have been paid.

BIR exceeded its first half collection target by 1.61% after generating P1.034 trillion in taxes, 8.11% more than a year earlier. The aim is to collect P 2.081 trillion this year. – Beatrice M. Laforga
