These States Have The Lowest Tax Burdens

There are seven states that do not pay taxes, and most of them are among the 10 with the lowest tax burdens, but there are other factors to consider that could impact where you choose to live, according to WalletHub’s report, “2022’s Tax Burden by State.”

Unlike tax rates, the tax burden measures the proportion of total personal income that residents pay toward state and local taxes.

To determine which of the 50 states tax their residents the most and least, WalletHub compared three types of state tax burden—property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes—as a share of total personal income in the state. The results were added to obtain the overall tax burden for each state.

The seven states without an income tax are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.  Four of those states are among the 10 with the lowest tax burden.

Additionally, the report noted that red states have a lower tax burden, with an average rank of 31.60, while blue states have a higher one, with an average rank of 19.36.

Here, from highest to lowest, are the 10 states with the lowest tax burdens.
